Candidate Party Research Project
A. Listed below are links to information and data that you will need to complete your project. Information will be updated occasionally and will be so noted.
1. Click here to view the discussion on the Utah caucus-convention versus the direct primary.
2. Click here for the Ehrenhalt article, "The United States of Ambition," and click here for the Squire article, "Voter Quality and Voting Behavior in U.S. Senate Elections."
3. Click here to download the "Precis" form. Use this form to summarize the articles you will use in your research project. Please note that you can "tab" your way through this form using the "tab" button. For example, fill out the the first blue box and when you have finished that, fill out the second and so forth. I encourage you to cite pages where there is something important that you might want to cite in a "footnote."
B. Project reading assignments.
1. Read Peverill Squire's article entitled "Challenger Quality and Voting Behavior in U.S. Senate Elections." (You can find this article in the link above: A. 2.) Fill out the "Precis" form available on line (see A. 3 above). I encourage you to read the abstract first (the summary of the article that is in small print at the top of this article) and use the abstract to begin to fill in the "Precis." On this precis I would like you to pay particular attention to the section called "Measuring Candidate Quality." In the "Methodology" section of the precis, summarize different approaches to measuring candidate quality. This will be very important to our project. DO NOT spend a lot of time summarizing the finding section. Do read the concluding section.
