THE 2008-2009 NEWBERRY COLLEGE RECYCLING PLAN
During the Fall 2008 semester, Newberry College students of the Summerland Honors Program (as well as others) are looking at the following toward developing a campus-wide recycling program:
- Develop an educational program to explain why recycling is important to all. We need to change the campus mindset on use and recycling of materials. Present information to the entire campus community; including faculty, staff and students.
- Determine what materials (paper, plastic, aluminum, etc) can be recycled and to where they can be recycled.
- Determine which materials we (the campus) can efficiently recycle this year at Newberry College. We can (and will) then add on to the program in future years.
- Determine what supplies (bins, etc) are needed to accomplish our recycling goals. Secure funds to purchase supplies.
- Determine the best locations for placement of recycling bins. Make sure safety is considered in the placement.
- Inform the campus community where the recycling bins are located and whether prepping or sorting is needed.
- Coordinate facilities and supplies to ensure recycling will work efficiently. Answer the question: how do we get material from campus to a recycling center?
- Coordinate human resources so all know what can and should be done and no one feels like the project is a big burden, or added chore.
- Develop an overall action plan based on data gathered from the above items. Present this to campus administrators for endorsement (approval).
- Further educate the campus community relative to the other “Rs” …. Reduce your use of materials; Reuse supplies; and more. This could be enhanced through FAL lectures and other events.
